CALPIA NEWSLETTER
Eric: Surplus Service, an industry leader in secure asset management and e-waste solutions based in Fremont, CA, has launched a joint venture enterprise at the Correctional Training Facility (CTF) in Soledad, CA. This operation focuses on electronic waste recycling and repurposing, with a priority on reuse over recycling. Surplus Service currently employs five incarcerated individuals. The program not only promotes sustainability but also provides valuable training for careers in the e-waste management industry.

Lou: We’re excited to partner with the Joint Venture Program (JVP) because we see strong synergy between its business model and our collective missions. Our motto is, “We give people and products a second opportunity for life.” Collaborating with the JVP is a meaningful way to advance our shared goals. It’s important to us to help make this partnership a success—both to positively impact lives and to support the planet through reuse.

Dan: As the Warehouse Manager for Surplus Service and a retired Correctional Counselor III, I’ve seen firsthand the profound impact programs like this can have. CALPIA played a key role in launching the Joint Venture Program at CTF. Their guidance, support, and collaboration with institutional staff were essential in helping us get up and running smoothly within a complex environment. This partnership not only equips participants with valuable job skills but also fosters meaningful rehabilitation and second chances. We deeply appreciate CALPIA’s continued support and commitment.

Incarcerated Worker: Working for CALPIA over the past 12 years has been a vital part of my personal transformation. Through this opportunity, I’ve developed real-world job skills, a strong work ethic, and the confidence to contribute meaningfully to a team. Being selected as the lead warehouse worker in the Joint Venture Program with Surplus Service has challenged me to grow both professionally and personally. This experience has shown me that change is possible—and that my past does not define my future. I’m proud to be part of something that promotes rehabilitation through responsibility, accountability, and purpose.
